Design

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro features a redefined design that balances innovation with some compromises. The shift from a glass to a plastic back, while enhancing durability, introduces a slippery texture, prompting the recommendation of a case for improved grip.

It maintains a slim profile measuring 163.8 x 76.8 x 8.9 mm dimension and pleasing aesthetics, with thinner bezels and a hole-punch design accommodating the front-facing camera.

On the front, ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro has an almost bezel-less notch around the 6.78-inch large screen.  Meanwhile, on the rear, the android phone has a smaller display on the back, though present, remains invisible when not in use, contributing to a cleaner look. ASUS continues its gaming legacy by incorporating pixel-like LED effects, providing a customizable and useful feature.

Furthermore, the ROG phone has a camera module positioned at the top left corner of the rear panel. The 5G phone also AniMe Vision lighting system on the back, adds a unique touch, displaying logos, graphics, and animations based on the user’s activities.

ASUS is retaining the headphone jack on its device and also support a dual USB-C port, strategically placed at the bottom edge and left side, offering convenience, especially for gaming scenarios. However, the reduction of mappable physical trigger buttons with the AeroActive Cooler X from four to two may disappoint gaming enthusiasts.

Display

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro boasts a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with an impressive (~88.2% screen-to-body ratio). The resolution is set at 1080 x 2400 pixels, offering a 20:9 ratio (~388 ppi density).

The display supports a vast color spectrum of 1 billion colors and features a gamer-friendly 165Hz maximum refresh rate, HDR10, and a brightness capacity ranging from 1600 nits (HBM) to an impressive peak of 2500 nits.

This substantial brightness improvement from the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate‘s 1500 nit maximum ensures optimal outdoor visibility even on the sunniest days.

The display enhancements go beyond the surface, introducing LTPO adaptive refresh technology for non-gaming scenarios. This allows the display to seamlessly switch between 1-120Hz based on onscreen movement, optimizing power efficiency.

The display bezels on all four sides has also been reduced significantly, eliminating space for a front-facing webcam and dual front-facing speakers. ASUS has also opted for a punch-hole cam, and while software can mask this area during gaming, it might be considered a substantial compromise by some users.

Furthermore, the display supports a wide dynamic range in both games and videos, accommodating most HDR formats, although Dolby Vision is notably absent. Additionally, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and features an Always-On display feature.

Camera

The Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro comes equipped with a significantly improved main camera, featuring the impressive 1/1.56-inch Sony IMX890 sensor, the same sensor found in the OnePlus 11.

To enhance stability beyond standard optical image stabilization (OIS), the device incorporates a new generation 6-axis Hybrid Gimbal stabilizer, a feature previously seen in the ASUS Zenfone 10. This combination ensures steady shots even in dynamic conditions.

The main camera, utilizing a 50MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture and OIS, is complemented by a 6-axis gimbal for more effective stabilization. Introducing a brand new 3x telephoto camera, it utilizes a Samsung JD1SM15 sensor with a substantial 32 MP resolution.

This Quad-Bayer unit captures 8 MP photos by default, featuring a 1/3.14″ sensor with 0.7µ individual pixels. The telephoto camera offers 3x optical zoom, supporting up to 30x digital zoom, with Hyper Clarity AI zoom advertised at up to 10x. Equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Asus’ Super Night Mode, it enhances low-light photography.  It also supports 10x digital magnification using sensor cropping.

Additionally, there is also a 13MP ultrawide camera offers a 120-degree field of view and f/2.2 glass. The 120-degree ultrawide camera is the same from the ROG Phone 7. This lens relies on a 13 MP OmniVision OV13B sensor, while lacking autofocus, its f/2.2 lens is free-form, contributing to improved edge sharpness and reduced distortion near the edges of the frame.

The Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro also has a 32MP front-facing camera which boasts a wider field of view, increasing from 73 degrees to 90 degrees. Above all, all four cameras benefit from continuous improvements in image processing and increased utilization of computational photography.

This camera has impressive features adding professionalism to each shot. During daylight, the main camera captures respectable shots with natural colors and ample surface detail. It has an HDR algorithms which work diligently, though occasional highlight clipping and low-contrast images may occur. While not reaching the level of competitors like Google, Apple, or Samsung, the camera performance is commendable, considering the device’s primary focus on gaming.

It also has Zoom capabilities that are particularly impressive, with 3x optical zoom shots displaying cleanliness and excellent dynamic range. In low-light conditions, the gimbal stabilization assists the main sensor, but using the dedicated Night mode can yield better results.

Hardware and Software

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro boasts the formidable Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, representing Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile processor to date. The Octa-core CPU configuration comprises a prime Cortex-X4 core clocked at up to 3.3 GHz, three Cortex-A720 cores running at up to 3.2 GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores at 3.0 GHz, and two Cortex-A520 cores at 2.3 GHz.

Accompanying this powerhouse CPU is the Adreno 750 GPU, ensuring top-tier graphics performance. The device offers ample storage space, with options ranging from 256GB to 1TB, catering to diverse user needs for gaming and media storage.

The ROG Phone 8 Pro runs on the latest Android 14, providing users with a cutting-edge operating system. Additionally, it features an AniMe Vision mini-LED display on the back, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and introducing versatile functionality.

While the full-color secondary display has retired, the mini-LED screen rotates between displaying the time, battery level, and the ROG logo by default. It can also show specific icons during camera use, a music visualizer during audio playback, or custom animations set in the settings, reminiscent of the LEDs on the back of the Nothing Phone 2.

The inclusion of AirTriggers sensors, programmable as shoulder buttons when holding the phone horizontally, adds a gaming-centric touch to the device. Despite a slight reduction in battery capacity to 5,500mAh compared to the ROG Phone 7, the ROG Phone 8 Pro maintains a sizable battery for extended usage.

In terms of connectivity, the phone features a pair of USB-C connections, supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 for high-speed wireless communication. It also support 5G network connection. Overall, the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro combines cutting-edge hardware, extensive storage options, and innovative features, making it a powerhouse for gaming and multimedia experiences.
